CCJs - what is a CCJ?
A CCJ is a County Court Judgement.
County Court Judgements are normally issued by a county court once you have been unable to pay a debt to a person or company that you
owe money to and the other party has taken you to court in an attempt to get the debt repaid. If the court declares that the judgment is valid
and that the money should be paid then you will have a County Court Judgement registered against you.
You will then have one calender month to pay the debt amount declared by the court. If this amount is NOT paid within this time period then a CCJ
is recorded against you on the Register of County Court Judgements and will be held on record for 6 years.
The fact that a CCJ is recorded against you may affect your ability to obtain credit and finance, particularly if more than one CCJ has been registered
against you. Credit reference agencies (such as Experian) will often be used by credit and finance companies to check your credit record and if they find
evidence of CCJs or bad credit history then they may take that into consideration when assessing your ability to pay.
